Contrary to the original description, ordering is not reflected by the country or language choice, since I have selected country Germany and language German, but I still get the US formatting style.

Please switch to the unambigous ISO 8601 format as suggested by kevan.

My mistake, I thought I'd seen %d/%m/%y strings in the translation tool and assumed that they could be swapped around for different languages, but now that I look for them I can only find "%s" or "${date} " to include a whole date string.

There's only one international date format, which is %Y-%m-%d.

Please switch to the unambigous ISO 8601 format as suggested by kevan and MilConDoin.

I personally prefer DD-MM-YYYY. That's what I'm used to as a Dutchie. After I got confused by some tournament dates, I hunted down all date strings in the Dutch translation and changed them to DD-MM-YYYY.

Using the standard YYYY/MM/DD seems logical, too.
MM/DD/YYYY just doesn't make any sense (except in USA apparently).

It looks like there are two date format Main Site translation strings after all - "${M}/${D}/${Y}" and "${M}/${D}/${Y} at ${H}:${m}". They have different orderings in other languages, and I've requested they be reordered to ISO 8601 for English. I don't know whether these strings are used for everything, though, as dates across BGA seem to vary slightly, sometimes having spaces between the slashes and sometimes not.

I can also see a text string in Main Site translation that reads "This string defines the date formatting for your language. It should contain the letters 'm', 'd', 'Y', 'H' and 'i' in the proper order. It's important to get this right! Are you sure?" either suggesting some overall language config page that I can't find, or that setting up a new language prompts for a date format - if the latter defaults to US, it should be changed to ISO 8601.

Note that YYYY-MM-DD is also the most logical order because it sorts correctly. It increments the same way the odometer in a car does. I'm with Randall Monroe: it's time we all got on with adopting this standard.

(Sorry, when I say logical/correctly it is because *most* world languages are read left-to-right. In any case the real point is that it IS the predominant established international standard for date formatting.)

It is my understanding that the date format is set through language choice. Could we not split English into English US and English International. Only the US use the MM/DD/YY format but they are far from the only people to speak english.

Either I already voted for this, or I ended my votes... and yet I would vote this a thousand times more.

The international standard format would be great, a custom setting might be even better even though I would choose the YYYY-MM-DD format anyway!

My country is UK and my language is English, yet I am given only the American date format. Please let me reorder my dates to the format I am used to. ISO 8601 is all well and good as a universal standard, but it's still not natural for most English speakers.

The option is now available in Preferences / Language to select the unambiguous ISO 8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD) for displaying dates.

NB: the option was visible since some days, but is functional only since today's release.

The text "By default, dates are displayed with the default format for your language" is totally incorrect. The default for English is the US format which is not the default for most English speakers.

Would it be possible to add "American" as a language so that the American date format is only applied to Americans and the rest of the world's English speakers can have dd/mm/yyyy?

Or just make dd/mm/yyyy a choice as well as ISO 8601?

Yes, good to see this as an option now, but I'm surprised at the implementation defaulting to the confusing one and acknowledging "it may be confusing, so you can choose to use the unambiguous ISO 8601 standard format instead". Why not default to the unambiguous one, and let Americans swap to the confusing one if they prefer it aesthetically?

The cost of being confused by a date can be a big one (I thought my premium account had expired when it hadn't; others might miss tournaments), and there's no hint that other formats exist - the user has to guess that maybe there's a preference to change it. The cost of finding a date readable but maybe a little on the formal side is much lower.

Instead of using "the default format for your language", you could overlay that with the player's defined country, if that's possible: if a player is set to both "English language" and "United States" they get MM-DD-YYYY, if they're set to English in any other country, they get YYYY-MM-DD.

Indeed, while definitely an improvement, it would be better if this were decoupled from the languages altogether, with 3 options (ISO 8601 being the default):

* YYYY-MM-DD (ISO 8601)
* DD-MM-YYYY
* MM-DD-YYYY
