Ok here's the full mindblowingly-confusing sequence of events in which the game logic and player log did stuff, it's very counterintuitive (It's like enhance bug #161843: "Search and battle result should display preview of result" boardgamearena.com/bug?id=161843)

a) Eomer (with Aragorn + 2 Rohirrim + 2 Elven) initiates battle against 6 shadow troops. So both Eomer's Marshal of the Mark ("MotM") and Aragorn's Captain of the West ("CotW") special abilities will apply to casualties:
b) Rolled two dice and the screen and log preview me a +1/-1 result. Get asked if I want to spend a Ring to reroll or a Sword to Show Valor.
c) It seems like Aragorn's CotW is implemented by deferring calculating the casualties to shadow until the absolute end of the roll, i.e. when I click "Don't reroll". The UI doesn't give me any preview of the net result factoring in both Eomer MotM and Aragorn CotW abilities: "Currently this will cause +2/-0 losses. Do you want to modify that with [Ring] Reroll or [Sword] Show Valor?"
d) Meantime I see Shadow hasn't had any troops removed so I spend a card with Sword for Show Valor.
e) Only after I click "Don't reroll" do I piecewise see the rest of the results:
Captain of the West: one more is killed [making it +3/-1]
Marshal of the Mark: smci ignores the loss of 1 friendly troop [making it +3/0]
Troops removed from North Ithilien:
End of the Battle

But you only get confirmation that those losses happened after you're asked to decide about rerolls.
Really the UI needs to preview of the net losses ("This will result in +2/0 losses. Do you want to modify...?")
