Looks like this might be just my mistake.
I misinterpreted those rules as "unless player declared (bid) an Abundance", not only specifically for "Abundance Declared".
So it is correct that for normal Abundance, the bidder does not start the hand, but only for Abundance Declared?

Sorry, I only just saw this but report. But yes, you have corrected yourself correctly haha! It is only in an abundance declared that you get the lead.

As I have always played since 1950's, abundance bidder does not play first - only 'declared' does. This is the approach described in 'Card Games' (Chambers).
Abundance is only 9 tricks, and would not have been bid unless player knew there was a good chance, despite an awkward lead, so doesn't need to extra 'bonus' of playing first.
'Declared' is so potentially endangered by a lead from elsewhere that the extra security of 'my own lead' IS sensible.
