I think the first edition was only for 3-4 player, so, maybe, there was some confusion born from that? I'm following the rules as written on BGA. I have a vague memory that the roofs thing will come in play only if one player has finished ALL the pieces, not only the roofs as written in the rules on BGA, but I could be wrong.

The detailed description above is not correct - neither is the comment from Akudiso.

The original rule of the first edition says (in German):
Besitzt nur noch ein einziger Spieler ein oder mehrere Dächer, muss er jedesmal, wenn er an der Reihe ist, mindestens ein Dach setzen.

Translated into English:
If only one single player still has one or more roofs, he must place at least one roof each turn.

This doesn't mean that one player can force all others to place their roofs by placing his last roof. It means that the last player with roofs has to also place them gradually.

I have encountered this in boardgamearena.com/table?table=182786021. In move 217, despite being the only player still in possession of a rooftop, I was not forced to play one. Maybe something to do with neutral rooftops?

This is normal since in the meantime, M. Dorra and I decided only to implement 2nd edition rules (with possibility to remove some new features like the well, etc.).

So you will only be playing second edition rules.
