I played one-hand games in SEGA MJ (Tengokuhai also supports the mode but I didn't try this there, and some jansous employ this rule).

Thanks for the suggestion, ufm. This is non-standard anyway, so I took the liberty to change it slightly to suit BGA little better. Play will simply continue until the first hand is won. This is to avoid having zero ELO propagation from an exhaustive draw. Exotic cases aside, after the first won hand, there is usually a single player in the lead.

Another fun, (completely tradition-destroying) addition would be a 2-player variant where you just control two opposite seats but I am not sure it's a good idea a) right now while the game is still in alpha b) to be part of the same game in any case (much like 7 wonders is kept separate from 7 wonders duel).

I don't think so. There is no established rule at all.

For comparison 3p is pretty common, of course less favored than 4p though.
However, 3p games change the gameplay drastically (most common rules remove 2~8 number tiles, no north wind, no abortive draws except 4 kongs, etc.).
I don't think implementing either 2p or 3p variant is worth it. Let's stick with 4p here.
