Counterpoint: Games that use tons of images for the logs (Ultimate Railroads is a recent example) take FOREVER to load logs, even on desktop. I always prefer concise, low-image logs, maybe with a few icons.

Perhaps a compromise could be saying "Player X used 3 vikings to ..."

YES! I came here to enter this suggestion if it didn't already exist.

I'm not a fan of image-heavy game logs (e.g. the Gaia Project implementation notoriously takes a toll on my computer - makes my streaming music pause etc.).
But it would be fantastic to have the words "used 3 vikings to emigrate". When I come back to my turn-based games, I often need to look at the last move I did to remind myself what series of actions I was in the midst of doing... and seeing that I spent 7 coins and got a card is not as helpful as seeing the word "emigrate". :)

I have been really conscious to make sure AFFO is as light as possible, despite being such a beefy game. Mainly because I use Safari, which means the game will lag if I give it the slightest opportunity.

For this, I'm really reluctant to add too much in this direction. The problem with describing in text, is that not all action spaces have names. I could invent names for them... else, I could just suck it up and add the images to the log.

Another idea - perhaps each player's last used action could be highlighted on the board? (Perhaps with a border of the colour of the player.)

I too would like an indication of what action has been taken / imitated.
Action spaces that do not have a name are usually simple, their name could be replaced by the name of the type of action like
- "Player x has played a hunting action for 1 stockfish"
or - "Player x has played 1 Vikiing on a hunting action for 1 stockfish"
or, if applicable, - "Player x has played 1 Vikiing to imitate a hunting action for 1 stockfish"

A compromise which gives a textual description and doesn't require adding names is to name the section of the board ("Build Houses", "Build Ships", etc.) and the number of vikings used. This doesn't unambiguously name every action space, but it does narrow it down considerably and reduce the need to play spot-the-difference with a memory of which slots had been used previously.
