Not a bug regarding Gates of Hell second power.

You cannot discard the Illusion to triggers some effects, that was explained by the game designer on bgg, and also part of the game faqs : boardgamegeek.com/thread/2334619/illusion-interaction

Illusion cannot be used with the Bard’s power, can it?
Correct. Magic items can't be discarded, destroyed, or placed so Illusion can't be used with powers that would do one of these things to a Dragon or Demon or Creature.
