What do you mean by "unconventional"? There are dozens of games on BGA with the same timer.
We discussed the possibility of everybody clicking "I'm ready" and publisher decided that to be a slow-down for the game

1. It is unconventional to have 1 player control said timer for all players. It lead me to miss the results on multiple turns.

2. It is also unconventional that it is such a LONG timer (even for a no-time-limit game.) Even for turn-based games, I have not seen the timer number be anywhere near this high (this game is using countdown from 500 or so!)
Typically I’ve seen it more like 5 or 10 or 30.

3. Sometimes lately these are options a user can set when creating a table, where someone can opt which they want:
A. Auto advance with a timer
B. Do not auto-advance (manually pass/continue)
See king of tokyo for an example.

Being a 500 seconds is a bug to be fixed.
It should be 5

If the concern was that it would be slowed down too much if everyone had to press to say they were ready (which is a silly concern, as it can be a simultaneous action), then this should be changed to be a set amount of time between rounds, not skipped by anyone.

It really detracts from the game to not see what the word was or if we got it. Should not have to rely on the chat or logs to do ao

Ah then 5 sec seems short enough that nobody should be able to take that away from the rest of the table.

“Take that away” meaning - allow everyone at the table to see the results for those 5 seconds, don’t skip past it because the chosen player pressed the button faster than that.

(Or if you really are concerned that 5 seconds between rounds is too long, then you have to require everyone at the table to press the button, not just a single person.)

Ok, I got the point. As with the other suggestions I'd like to see how many people dislike the fact that a single player decides for everybody

I noticed you changed the 500 seconds to 5 seconds. Of course 500 was way too long, but 5 is very fast : this is a game where it's interesting to chat or discuss on "why you said this clue", "I found the word because of this clue", "what did you mean with this clue", etc.
So 5 second is too short to be able to have these interesting discussions
